Understanding Rugs

Though the huge number of different oriental carpet designs can be bewildering for the beginner, it is possible to make sense of it all by being aware of one simple fact: almost every oriental carpet can be described as basically curvilinear or geometric in design. Curvilinear carpets are prepared almost exclusively in the city workshops. A very fine knot is necessary to create such delicate curves and arabesques, and the intricate designs are the product of careful planning, usually by a master designer. The results are controlled with a courtly elegance and at their best, can be absolutely sublime.

Geometric carpets are generally tribal or village in origin. Their angular designs are a product of both their coarse weave, which renders curves impossible, and the weavers' habit of producing their designs from memory as the carpet progresses, which makes very unique and original creations.

While true carpet connoisseurs appreciate the beauty of both design categories, they will almost always feel a natural bias toward one or the other. Both of the designs are made in Persia, Turkey, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Russia, China, and Romania - the finest of them being the legendary Persian rugs. In general, the finer the weave and the more details executed in the pattern, the more valuable that piece will become. As finer carpets get older, their value increases. This is especially true with Persian rugs past the age of fifty years. For that reason, many rug enthusiasts prefer to purchase older rugs because of the unique character and soul the rug has acquired throughout the years.
